THE PARTICIPANTS

Mumtaz Hussain has studied at the Media Arts Center in London and at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His recent paintings continue his engagement with language and history. The relationship of hieroglyphs and ancient sculpture in his recent series, "The Soul of Civilization," contrasts with the earlier calligraphic series, "Modern Mystics," which involved the Islamic tradition of poetry as visual expression.

Diane Samuels, multi-media artist from Pittsburgh, recently won an international competition sponsored by the Center for Jewish History for which she created a 22' high by 20' wide mosaic tablet. Entitled Luminous Manuscript, this monumental sculpture contains 170,000 alphabet letters and numbers that she collected from hundreds of individuals from the Center's community.

Annelies Davidson graduated from the London School of Eurythmy and has performed with the London Eurythmy Group throughout Europe and the United States. From 1986 to 2002 she taught at and performed with Eurythmy Spring Valley (School and Ensembles) in New York state. Since then she has been active as a free lance focusing on eurythmy in relation to the spoken word.

Archie Rand is Chair of and Senior Professor of Visual Studies at Columbia University. He has had over eighty solo exhibits and his work is found in many collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. He expanded the tradition of Jewish art when he painted a 8,000-square-foot mural inside the Orthodox B'nai Yosef synagogue in Brooklyn.

The paintings of Jill Musnicki will be on display. A resident of Sag Harbor, New York, she studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Her work is exhibited in museums and galleries in this country and abroad.
